Monitoring your point total while playing enables you to determine how close your opponents are to winning as well as your own position. A more aggressive approach, such as discarding high-value cards or trying to go out yourself before your opponent does, might be warranted if you observe that they have a low point total because they were able to successfully merge the majority of their hand. Alternatively, it might be wise to switch strategies and concentrate on cutting down deadwood as soon as you can if you have a number of high-point cards that you have little chance of melding anytime soon.
