A standard 52-card deck is used for the game, which usually requires two to six players. The goal is to draw and discard cards to create setsplay video slots & runs, with the ultimate goal being to meld all of your cards before your opponents do. The number of cards dealt to each player is determined by the number of players, usually seven or ten. One face-up card initiates the discard pile, while the remaining cards form a draw pile.

It could make more sense to discard a card that doesn't contribute to any sets or sequences than a card that might finish a combination if you have several of those cards. This tactic streamlines your own hand for stronger melds while reducing the possibility of giving your opponents an advantage. Keep in mind that every card you decide to discard gives your opponents an opportunity, so consider it carefully. Being perceptive can provide you a big advantage over your rivals in Rummy 9.
