It is thought that the game first appeared in Mexico under the names Concentration & Concentration Rummy.. Many versions that are played today are the result of the many changes and adaptations it experienced as it traveled across borders. In the 1930s, when people were looking for inexpensive entertainment during the Great Depression, the game became extremely popular in the US. The first commercially manufactured rummy sets appeared during this time, including decks of cards made especially for rummy play with distinctive rules and illustrations.
